Cheap Style Possible with Foolproof Planning System
April 10, 2015

FASHION TIP

How to be stylish while living on restricted budget is one of many challenges faced by older women.

The Perceptions Blurred Dot Dress & Solid Shrug($40)and Kasper two-piece suit ($60) are available at Boscov's Department Store.

The 3-Step Foolproof Wardrobe Planning page details how to create a mix-and-match wardrobe of coordinates.

Use the suit jacket with the dress for business; switch to the shrug for evening. We now have three looks for $100.

This system is foolproof, because you decide what you need based on how you spend your time. No more wasting money on buying something cute that you won’t often wear.

Planning and purchasing garments with multiple uses lowers cost-per-wearing.

I stick to jewel tones such as turquoise, blue, purple, and green; these colors are my friends. Add black, white, and neutrals for suits and bottoms, and I have dozens of possible outfit combinations.

Everything in my closet goes with mostly everything else. Knowing what colors I want also simplifies going through sale and thrift-store racks of clothing.

Add the Stripe Eternity Jewelry Scarf ($10) to each of those three outfits, and we've doubled our wardrobe to six outfits

The Zac & Rachel 3/4 Sleeve Pin Tuck Pleated Top ($20) may be worn tucked into the pants with the jacket (+1 look), alone outside the slacks for casual Friday (+1), and with the scarf (+2).

Total: $130 for 10 outfits, or $13 each. Spend as much as you can afford on base pieces, such as the suit, and flesh out with cheaper tops and accessories.

One affiliate retailer that offers discounted garments is Sierra Trading Post. Sierra Trading Post has store locations in some Western states.

Affiliate retailers pay Fashion After 50 a small commision when you click through to shop at their sites, and those pennies are what make the site possible. Watch for special, short-term deals, such as this one: Free Your Feet: Up to An Extra 50% off select Sandals! Valid through April 13, 2015.

My personal favorite for low-cost sportswear and pajamas is Beall's Outlets, with locations in Florida as well as online. Everything is 30% off Friday and Saturday, but take an extra $10 off your $50 purchase with the code EXTRASAVINGS on 4.10 and 4.11. $50+ orders receive free shipping

Avenue/Jessica London is an economical choice for plus-size fashions, with both online and store locations. Check all of their sales and coupon codes before purchasing, like this one for Avenue: 30% Off 1 Item with code AV30NOW

Wardrobe planning on a budget takes time and effort, just like budget meal planning. Taking care of one's garments so they last and staying at about the same weight are other ways to extend the life of clothing.

There will be trade-offs when we stick to a budget. By knowing your fashion archetype style preferences and what you need, a flattering collection of clothing may be built over time. Or, as the Rolling Stones sang, "You can’t always get what you want, but if you try, sometimes you get what you need."

EXPRESSING THE GODDESS

A nine-year-old model is being called Most Beautiful in the World and photographed in sexualized clothing and poses.

Way back when I was in graduate school, the corrupting effect of barely pubescent models was already known.

Many of us remember when our mothers rushed for little gold safety pins to fix a dainty handkerchief between the sides of the V of any top deemed too low-cut.

I pity mothers and grandmothers today trying to find modest clothing for pre-teens and teens. My recent shopping trip for some dresses resulted in more misses than hits. A little black dress that I am keeping must have a broad border of black crochet lace sewn around the hemline to lengthen it.

The corrupting influence of fashion models whose boyish bodies have not yet filled out has numerous ill effects.

The unlikely figures, even among teenage girls, has motivated an epidemic of anorexia-buliema. This disease can kill, as it did the tragic Karen Carpenter among others.

Young women are perpetually dissatisfied with their bodies. In addition from the suffering it causes them, they are distracted from developing their native intelligence and creativity as more worthy dimensions of who they are.

Older women are cast aside as too old for beauty, love, and expressing our sexuality.

Children today may be in danger from predators just walking home from school. Not so long ago, most of us felt safe walking home from school in small groups.

Thus it becomes more important than ever that we, the women elders, become role models in how we dress, develop our intelligence and creativity, express compassion, wisdom, and truth.

We need not make grand gestures to be effective. If we can touch with grace and light humor the lives of those around us, we each offer our small sample of wisdom to counteract the madness of making a nine-year-old a symbol of fashion for womankind.
