How to Use Bright Colors to Be Bold, Beautiful, and Playful for Summer
July 10, 2015
Summer brings out my urge to make a color splash, do something different, be more wild and carefree.
My normal style of dressing is Athena – professional, respectable, coordinated, and a little on the dull side. Like most women whose normal preferences are the fashion archetypes Athena and Sophia, I tend to under-accessorize. I go for what is practical and polished.
The only accessory I wear no
matter what is pierced earrings.
Let's take this geometric patterned jacket Appleseed's. I don't own this jacket, but it is typical of those I've bought. Free Shipping on orders $50+ at Appleseeds.com with code AE5H3. Offer valid through 8/9.
$5 Flat Rate Shipping at Appleseeds.com! Offer valid 6/28 - 8/22. This photo fits everything I said about my Athena style.
How could I jazz up this look? One easy way is to team it with unexpected colors and playful accessories.
First, let's make the look more casual by turning up the cuffs and pushing up the sleeves to the forearms. If the sleeve is not narrow enough to stay up, pinch a small pleat into the bottom edge of the cuff and roll it up twice or more to secure the narrower opening.
Second, let's sweep into summer with some white wide-leg gauze cotton pants from Beall's, top left.
If you've got great legs and thighs, go a little bit sexier with the Collette body-hugging pants, right, at Soft Surroundings Soft Surroundings: my time, my place, my self. Shop now..

Now, let's get jiggy with the top by adding an unexpected color, such as bright lime green or taxicab yellow.
Overstitching and a tie front give the Coral Bay green top from Beall's special flare.
Add this Lime Delight linen bag with border trim from Novica. 10% off NOVICA's Summer Collection! Valid 7-14-15 through 7-17-15 11:59 PM PT.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Colorful garments – ball gowns, kimonos, evening pajamas – made from yards upon yards of iridescent silk or velvet. I own an unjustifiable number of such outfits and jump at the chance to wear them. Against the etiquette about which I am otherwise all too conscious, I frequently, and unrepentantly, overdress for the occasion." -- Julia Glass

EXPRESSING THE GODDESS
My reading has been energized since returning from the conference on Jung and Dream Interpretation by The Haden Institute in North Carolina.
This book has been on my shelf quite some time: The Metamorphosis of Baubo: Myths of Woman's Sexual Energy
It is a fascinating read. Winifred Milius Lubell does a fine job of synthesizing information from various high-quality research sources and making the history of this figure from antiquity come
Baubo is funny, earthy, and a bit bawdy – the kind of old woman I aspire to be. In reality I follow the prescriptive norms of our society and mostly hide my rebelliousness.
In the Greek story of Persephone being abducted to the Underworld by Hades, her mother, the goddess Demeter, punished earth with endless winter in her grief. It is the servant, Baubo, who entices Demeter from her funk with jokes and tlifting her skirt to expose herself.
This act is linked to ancient fertility rituals and may be a reminder to Demeter of her own fecundity.
Lubell believes that Baubo is a metamorphosis of the great-mother-goddess who, according to the works of Maria Gimbutas and others, was the reigning diety until wrenched from her place as a symbol of the source of all life by the patriarchal religions, primarily those of ancient Greece and Rome.

Scapegoat Complex: Toward a Mythology of Shadow and Guilt (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian Analysts
by Sylvia Brinton Perera.
Dr. Perera has become one of my favorite writers since I read her Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women
Beautifully written, Perera instructs on how the scapegoat – live goats who were ritually sacrificed in ancient times – carried the sins and guilt of the people so that they might be purged of this burden.
Today, we carry our victimhood with us as psychic burdens that can block us from fully experiencing life. Perera uses case studies to illustrate how we may free ourselves from these emotional chains.
