Wardrobe Basics: Make Your Own Rules for What's Right
by: Anonymous L

What are the 10 must haves to start a wardrobe?

That's a terrific question. I believe this varies according to lifestyle.

I would think that every woman needs one dark outfit that can be worn to funerals and special occasions, depending on whether it is dressed up or down. It might be tailored slacks and a silk blouse, or a dress, or a skirt and top, perhaps with a jacket.

I would think that everyone needs a white blouse, a good blazer or jacket, a neutral colored set of slacks -- something such as khakis that can be dressed up or down.

After that, things start to get a bit more sketchy for me. In some climates, one would need an all-season raincoat with a heavy liner and a sweater to wear under it on really cold days. In Florida, I hardly ever wear my all-weather coat, even with the lining zipped out. I have given away tons of winter coats and beautiful sweaters.

Jeans may be essential for a woman who lives in horse country and lives a sporting life; a city woman may want never to wear them.

We all need shoes and handbags. Most of us older women will want some dressier pumps or maryjanes, as well as shoes to wear with slacks and walking shoes.

As the wardrobe planning page suggests, think about how you spend your days, and invest your money in the garments that will be most useful and help you feel good about how you look. Invest in the best quality garments you can afford in classic styles and colors for things you are likely to wear for years to come.

Up in Arms
by: Sandie

What about us who are over 70? Yes, there are a lot of us 50's cheerleaders, dancers, etc etc that still feel 30 but know they arn't and want to dress accordingly. I am mother of 7 and Grammy to 27. I have kept myself in pretty good shape, I think!! Am self conscious of "old arms" and seem to wear a sweater constantly!! This drives my husband crazy. (He still sees the young girl he married 55 years ago. ANY HINTS?

Sandie, I hear you. When I am choosing dresses and tops for the pages, it is often challenging to find garments with more than a cap sleeve.

I would look for clothing with kimono, raglan, and peek-a-boo sleeves. These have a more youthful look, IMHO.

If you live in a colder climate and need the sweaters for warmth, there also are some lovely open-front fly-away front type sweaters. Of course, I wouldn't want to be wearing one of these if I was preparing a meal or working around the house. I know me -- and all that flying away fabric would be a stain magnet.

It can take a little work to find the right clothing. I find it more challenging to enjoy clothes shopping as I did when I was younger.

I tend to shop in spurts.

Try to cultivate a joyful attitude when you are shopping and triumph when you find clothes that are just what you want!

If you husband still sees you as you were, enjoy it and dress for him. I wish I still had someone in my life who could see the young me.

Hi Sandie --

You might try some kimono and raglan sleeves, as well as some of the peek-a-boo sleeves of lace and burnout designs.

These are on-trend right now.

You are so lucky to have someone who sees the young you. Treasure that man!
